Very nice knife. Too many people try to make a Bowie into a utilitarian or all-purpose knife, which it is not. A Bowie is a fighting knife. When they try to make it heavier and broader for a camp knife or a chopper it is at best Bowiesque, meaning it somewhat resembles a bowie. Also, a bowie is designed for a certain style of fighting. One of the most effective moves with a bowie is the back cut. A back cut is done with a flick of the wrist from a high held position. To me, this works better if the blade is slightly heavier than the handle to help give extra momentum. Also, if the handle is too long, it will strike your wrist during a back cut. I like the handle no more than two fingers width longer than the width of my palm. This is in no way derogatory toward your knife, which as I said is very nice. I like it a lot. The only this I would change would be to shorten the handle, but that is just my personal taste.

It is really important for all of us modern craftsmen to get our hands on the real deal. As well as learning to use them properly tbh. Especially swords & other weapons. One can't get those little details in how they balance, their construction etc without it & learning to use them helps understand why they made some of the choices in design.

The problem with such cutlasses (according to Matt from scholagladiatora for example) is that a hilt like this wasn't there in the Golden Age of Piracy (1650-1730) for it was typical for navies in XIX century.

Awesome! Very nice puukko and sheath, you don't need much steel to make puukko out of it. I once saw a old blacksmith forged decent size puukko with hidden tang out of 10mm x 25mm roller bearing and used only tongs and hammer, but he was experienced smith with 54 years under the belt at that time. He told me that after the war when there was shortage of about everything, he forged knife blades for the factories out of a railroad track cutted into smaller pieces.

that was great show and tell, and honest critique of your work. IMO this was challenging, other vids of making D guard handle same, required lots of tlc care, fit and finish to get it just so right, sweet to the eye. Expect a reality disconnect from movie Props/ fantasy blades vs the real world of black smithing in functioning blade. Fantasy blades and out there, and historical blades say that is so. thanks for posting Be more Viking
